Keep Your Area Rugs Looking Brand-New, Here’s How!

If your area rug is starting to lose its vibrant colours, then it may be time to clean it. Area rugs are built to last, but you can’t prevent them from becoming grimy. Dirty area rugs are gross and uncomfortable. Thankfully, area rug cleaning isn’t very complicated; in fact, you can breathe new life into it.

Here are some care tips to keep your area rug looking good and clean:

Use Your Vacuum

Take out that vacuum and clean large areas of your area rug to get rid of dirt. If it’s reversible, make sure to clean both sides and be careful not to vacuum the fringe.

Get Rid of Pet Hair

Unfortunately, this one you may need to do manually. Brush out the pet hair from your rug by using a stiff brush. Brush in the direction of the nap of the rug.

Turn the Rug Once a Year

Sun and foot traffic can put additional stress on your area rugs. That’s why you need to turn them once or even twice a year to even out the wear. That way, they will still look good.

Shake Them

If the area rug is small enough, you can take it outdoors and shake it to remove dirt and debris.

Now that you know some of these basic care tips, we’ll get more into details! Here are tips for cleaning your area rug, depending on the material:

  • Hand-knotted, antique, and oriental rugs: These types of area rugs are often used in kitchens and high-traffic areas. Therefore, be prepared to pay more attention to them. If you have a new Oriental rug, vacuum it the way you would a carpet and wool rug. When it comes to vintage and antique rugs, you need to be extra careful. Use a piece of nylon screen over the rug and weigh it down with heavy items, such as books. When the rug is secure, vacuum over the screen. On the other hand, you can also tie a piece of nylon mesh over the vacuum attachment. However, you need to change the mesh frequently as you go along because dirt will accumulate over time. It’s also a good idea to have your rugs cleaned by professionals at least once a year.
  • Rush, grass, coir, sisal: When you have rugs made from natural fibres, they have an open weave that lets dirt sift through to the floor. Clean them by vacuuming frequently and removing the rug occasionally so you can vacuum the floor. Also, most of these rugs are reversible, so you need to flip them every time you vacuum. For stains and discolorations, scrub them with a soft brush dipped in soapy water and then rinse with water. Place a towel over the wet area and blot it dry as much as possible.
  • Fur and sheepskin: For these types of rugs, use talcum powder and leave it for several hours. Then, brush the powder through the hair then shake it out. Repeat this many times. When it comes to cleaning the back, you can use a cotton cloth dipped in lukewarm, soapy water.
